BOARD MEETING: 9:30 AM

WELCOMING FROM THE HOUSE EAR INSTITUTE: Ms. Christa Spieth, Communications Specialist.

CALL TO ORDER AND INTRODUCTIONS: PRESIDENT PDG Ralph Penning

ATTENDANCE: (Board Members) PDG Ralph Penning, PDG Capp Loughboro, PDG Larry Prince, PDG Don Cornett, Lion Marge Prince, Sandy Greenberg, Ted Cartee & Gary Olson. (Guest) Lion Ruben Gonzalez, Sandy’s friend, Ralph’s Granddaughter and friend.

REPORTS:

President: PDG Ralph Penning

A. Life Member Plaque presentation to the family of Craig Tschida was given by a District Governor back East, for the $1,000 raised in lieu of flowers to the host of the Fairfield Host Lions Club..

MEMBERSHIP: PDG Larry Prince & Ted Cartee

  1. The Display at the MD4 Convention and mailings received one Life Member.

BULLETIN AND NEWS LETTER: Sandy Greenberg, and new Lion Jim Fortney’s Web Page.

  1. The outstanding New Letter was sent to 920 Lions Secretaries, including request for Life Memberships. Website: www.orgs.cc/lions/ [Now: www.orgs.cc/wlef/ ]

HOUSE EAR INSTITUTE:

  1. Request for Funding for a special instrument to test the hearing of the Audio Mixers in the Broadcast Industries to determine the losses at high frequencies.
  2. James D. Boswell, Chief Executive Officer, showing the average earnings of 11%, gave the results of the Endowment Earnings.
  3. Number of ABI patients funded 2001 thus far is 22.
  4. A report from Janet W. Doak, Executive Vice President, was given covering all of the support of the Western Lions Ear Foundation to the House Ear Foundation since the beginningin 1974. She stated more than $600,000 in total, which includes the $250,000 in the endowment.

OLD BUSINESS:

  1. Questions from the board re: MD4 and District Endorsements. The Secretary reported that all of the necessary reports were given to those for approval.
  2. All of the Conventions & Cabinet Meetings were attended with our new display per our last board meeting recommendations.
  3. The New Display that was purchased by Capp Loughboro for $2,165.00 (No cost to WLEF) special discounted price from $2,750 from MYCO Displays & Graphics, Inc. Capp asked President Ralph if we could give Marilyn Yamamoto, President of MYCO a Life Membership for the discount. Ralph Approved.
  4. Publicity: Meeting of the Society of Television Engineers, guest speaker from the House Ear Institute, " Hearing loss in the Broadcast Audio Mixing Engineers". Ventura STAR newspaper reported that the Ventura Downtown Lions had given a Life Membership to Lion John Rider. (Dec 12, 2000)

NEW BUSINESS:

  1. District Governor Diane Van Trees made a donation of $900.00 to WLEF for the following:
  2. $800.00 for the House Ear Institute’s "Hearing Camperships for Youth" and $100.00 for a plaque with the names of the departed Lions in 4A3 2000/2001 year to be displayed in the Children’s Wing of the House Ear Institute.

  3. Motion by Lion Sandy Greenberg and seconded by Lion Ted Cartee to fund the following:
    1. $10,000 for the continuation of the ABI project.
    2. $ 8,013.12 for the HEI’s SOUND PARTNER, TM. Project for the test of hearing loss in the Audio Engineer’s high frequency range.
    3. Transfer the Life Membership income to the House Ear Institute Endowment account.

REMARKS FROM THE PRESIDENT, BOARD & FLOOR:

President PDG Ralph thanked everyone for attending. A motion was made by PDG Larry Prince and seconded by Ted Cartee for Lion Ralph Penning to continue the presidency for the next year. Lion Sandy Greenberg closed the nominations and a unanimous vote was passed.

NEXT MEETING: Lion Gary Olson will arrange sometime in September 2001.
